How to Choose a Licensed Adult Family Home in Clark County, WA

HopeSprings Care Team·May 19, 2025

Not every licensed adult family home in Washington State is the same. Licensing establishes a legal floor — not a ceiling — and the gap between the minimum and exceptional can be enormous. Knowing what to look for, and what to ask, can make the difference between a good placement and a great one.

1. Verify DSHS Licensing and Inspection History

Every adult family home in Washington must be licensed by DSHS. Before visiting, check the home's public record through DSHS's online database. Review inspection results for any history of citations, complaints, or enforcement actions. A clean record isn't just reassuring — it tells you something about how the provider operates under pressure.

2. Ask About Staff Ratios and Overnight Coverage

Ask directly: "What is your staff-to-resident ratio during the day and overnight?" And then the follow-up that matters most: "Are your overnight staff awake or on-call?" Awake overnight staffing is critical for fall prevention, medication assistance, and emergency response. Not all AFHs provide it. HopeSprings does — around the clock.

3. Meet the Caregiver Who Will Be Working with Your Loved One

In large facilities, staff rotate and residents may interact with dozens of people each week. In a good adult family home, your parent will see the same one or two caregivers every day. Meet them. Trust your instincts. The relationship between caregiver and resident is everything in this kind of care.

4. Evaluate the Physical Environment

The home should feel like a home — warm, clean, and calm. Look for private rooms or clear room personalization, wide hallways and accessible bathrooms, proper grab bars and non-slip flooring, and good natural light. Note whether current residents appear comfortable and engaged.

5. Ask About Meal Preparation

Home-cooked meals, prepared in the home's kitchen and served family-style, are one of the hallmarks of a quality adult family home. Ask how meals are planned, whether they accommodate dietary restrictions (diabetic, low-sodium, pureed), and whether residents have input into what they eat.

6. Understand the Care Plan Process

A good adult family home will conduct a thorough care assessment before or shortly after move-in, and develop an individualized written care plan. Ask how the plan is updated as needs change, and how the family is kept informed and involved in care decisions.

7. Clarify What Is and Isn't Included in the Monthly Rate

The base monthly rate often covers room, board, laundry, and basic care. But there may be add-on charges for incontinence supplies, medication management, skilled nursing visits, or specialized equipment. Get clarity on what's included — and get it in writing.

8. Ask About Transition Policies

What happens if your loved one's needs exceed what the home can safely provide? A reputable adult family home will have a clear, transparent policy about when a transfer may be necessary — and will help coordinate that transition rather than handle it abruptly.

9. Check References

Ask the provider for references from current or former residents' families. No legitimate adult family home will have difficulty providing these. If they hesitate, take that seriously.

10. Visit More Than Once — and at Different Times of Day

Your first tour gives you a first impression. A second visit — unannounced, or at a different time of day — tells you what's consistent. The quality of care at 7 PM should be identical to the quality at 10 AM. If it is, that's a home worth trusting.

We welcome every family to visit HopeSprings as many times as they need. Schedule your first tour — and come back a second time. We're proud of what you'll find either way.
